When disputes take place, the world is only willing to discuss the tragedy in such disputes: the injustice of ethnic cleaning and the plight of needy refugees. Are disputes solved in this way? I don’t believe so. Why don’t people turn their attention to curbing the means of war?
The United States is the envy of almost all countries. It is a world leader and a leader in all fields. On the other hand, its attractiveness is diminished by the fact that it operates a war industry and profits from the sale of arms.
In the present world, war is not a crime. Except for certain, unusual circumstances the constitutions of all countries permit war. Other destructive activities, accepted in the past, ate now crimes, for example, the slave trade and drug trafficking. But at present war is not a crime, so the sale of arms is a legitimate, national industry. But arms have only one purpose, to destroy property and life. I believe Americans have the common sense to realize that the availability of arms bring about war, and that dealing in arms is wrong.
The U.S. Constitution, Article III, Section 3 states, “ Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort.” In other words, any American individual or institution which helps countries hostile to the U.S. is committing treason against the U.S. Many of the weapons exported by the United States arm countries that are hostile to it.
In effect, the U.S. is committing an act of treason against itself, and treason is a crime.
The United States is a leader in all fields. Instead of arms it should be exporting technology to the third world, where poverty is the root cause of war. By developing the third world, the U.S. would be creating new markets for its products, resulting in huge profits for itself and benefits for the whole world. I believe we can eliminate arms from the world. I believe that at the beginning of the 21st century we must finally recognize that war is a crime.
